Baird's pocket gopher (Geomys breviceps) is found in central and southeastern Texas eastward into western Louisiana and north into central Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma. Pocket gophers (n=136) from 32 locations from throughout the distribution of this species were analyzed for nuclear genetic diversity using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP). Six populations were defined with pair-wise F ST values ranging from 0.0747 to 0.4185. Mantel test and principal coordinate analysis reveal a pattern of isolation by distance and a north to south cline. Major rivers do not appear to be barriers to gene flow rather, they may act as corridors for dispersal. The data also support previous hypotheses indicating that G. b. breviceps is distinct relative to G. b. sagittalis.
