Poetry, as already observed, owes its beauty, in the first instance, to a geometric principle of proportion, upon which ... it produces a sensible effect of pleasure upon the ear, independently of the meaning conveyed in the words of which the measure is composed. But in music this geometric principle is much more generally understood, and its rules philosophically determined by the science of acoustics.
